Hip Hip Hooray! Let's Get Ready for K!
As your child’s school year approaches, many parents ask how they can help their child prepare for kindergarten. Here are some skills and activities to practice that can greatly help children be successful the first few weeks of kindergarten.
- Use the bathroom independently
- Close/lock and open bathroom stall doors
- Wash hands independently with soap and water
- Blow nose with a tissue
- Take outerwear on/off on their own
- Turn outerwear right-side-out
- Close/open buttons, snaps and zippers on clothing
- Tie shoes
- Open and close Ziploc bags
- Open snack packages (fruit snacks, granola bars, snack bags)
- Share toys with others
- Wait their turn
- Follow 2-3 step directions (ex. Go put your toy away, pick out a book to read and come back to me.)
- Listen to stories and talk about the details in the story
- Recognize, spell and write their first name
We truly look forward to getting to know you and your child and having a fun year of learning.
Teacher Assignments on ParentVue
Teacher assignments will be available to parents on Wednesday, July 30 on ParentVUE. This important communication tool gives parents access to up-to-date school records specific to their child including grades, attendance, health, and more. You may access ParentVUE through our website. Please call our office at 520-579-4750 if you need support logging onto ParentVUE.
Boo Hoo Woo Hoo Breakfast for Kindergarten Parents
After you wave good-bye to your Kindergarten student, please join us in the cafeteria for our annual Boo-hoo or Woo-hoo Breakfast at 8:15am on the first day of school on Monday, August 4.
Starting kindergarten can be an emotional and exciting experience for both students and parents. Come cry “Boo-hoo” or shout “Woo-hoo” as you send your little one off to kindergarten. While your child is getting acquainted with their new teacher, you will meet with other parents and learn more about our school and PTF. Enjoy doughnuts, coffee and juice. Younger siblings are welcome to come to the breakfast with you. This event is sponsored by our Twin Peaks PTF.
Morning Drop Off Procedure
Kindergarten parents are allowed to walk their children to the classroom door the first week of school. You will need to sign in and out each morning at the front gate. Starting the second week of school you will drop your child off at the front gate, and your child will walk to class on their own.
Practice letting your child take the lead and encourage their independence during the first week so that they are prepared to go it alone. If you child needs help, let the adult on duty at the front gate know.
Please Don't Forget to Read Every Day You Eat....
Please instill a minimum of 20 minutes of reading time daily for your child. This Reading and Writing Parent Guide from Hanover Research contains some resources/ideas that foster the love of reading. I especially love the tip about “not leaving the house unless your child has a book in their hand."
- Read with your child every day
- Practice letter identification and letter sounds wherever you go
- Make reading fun
- Pack books in the car (not just electronics)
- Look at picture clues
- Ask questions about what your child reads
- Make reading and writing a part of your everyday activities
- Visit the public library and find some virtual library resources
